TALAVERA
Talavera pottery was introduced to Mexico in 1645. The original Talavera techniques were introduced by Talavera potters coming to the New World from Talavera de la Reina in the province of Toledo in central Spain. Talavera has many foreign influences on its style and technique. These include the Majolica Process that comes from the Islamic world, and imagery derived from Chinese porcelain including the ubiquitous blue and white. Yellows, oranges, and greens came from the Italian Renaissance majolica to name only a few.

WHAT IS TALAVERA
Talavera is a pottery & glazing process brought from Spain to Mexico. The Talavera process was developed in Majorca, an island off the cost of Spain and introduced to Spain and Italy.

The process used to create Talavera is referred to as majolica, majolica, tin-glazed earthenware, delft ware or faience, depending on its origins. This process is considered as an On-Glaze process, meaning that decoration is added on the raw glaze surface, usually called majolica. It is actually a kind of color on glaze or glaze-on-glaze painting. All Talavera or Majolica pieces are handmade or hand formed and hand decorated in the finest of detail using glaze colors in lieu of stain colors.

Talavera must be made using the Majorca process. The Majorca process is what produces the raised surface or texture. The raised surface occurs because each color is actually a glaze (a form of glass) that thickens the parts of the surface to which it is applied. The Talavera process is difficult because all colors must melt close to each other. If they do not the colors will run or the glaze many not totally melt. In addition, each color must have an expansion and contraction rate that is compatible with the other colors, as well as with the clay body. Defects, such as crazing or shivering can occur if the expansion and contraction rates are not in harmony with each other.

We also have Alonso Luis which is classified as Talavera of Mexico, also produced in Puebla. All are hand designed and created using the Majolica process.

Our company policy is to offer only the finest of pottery and to fully inform you about what you are purchasing. Some suppliers will call their products Talavera even though they are not the Majolica process in order to take advantage of the Talavera quality and popularity. This occurs both in Mexico, and in the U.S.

Any handmade and hand painted article is not perfect since it is not molded. This is what makes it unique, as well as desirable and treasured. No two pieces will be exactly alike even if decorated by the same artist. Shapes, sizes, and color will vary somewhat. Some imperfections will occur since it is individually created. Handmade pottery, throughout its process is an art. Talavera and More carries only the finest of these products.

Talavera Poblana if not in stock and not previously formed can take 90 to 120 days to produce due to the following: 1. The clays must be made and cured; 2. The piece must be formed; 3. The formed piece must cure 30 to 60 days depending on the size and thickness of the material; 4. The piece must then fired at a low temperature to give it stability at approx. 800 degrees (F); 5. The piece then has to be glazed but not fired and requires drying time; 6. The pieces are then given to an artist for decoration. 7. After decoration the piece must then again dry before firing. After firing the piece is checked for quality and if the quality is not acceptable the process must be restarted. Note that the manufacture in most cases has limited number of pieces formed and cured in stock, but the stock can be depleted very quickly for such valued items.

We also carry a unique line of products from Surrena. Surrena is imported from Italy and is handmade and hand decorated ceramic made from clays called Terre Cotte. The Surrena line is decorative as well as functional. The line consist of large platters, fountains, tables, sink consoles with mirrors, flowerpots, pots up to 6 feet tall, fireplace surrounds, pedestals, lamps, zodiac plaques, and sconces.

We are now carrying a line of furniture . This furniture is unique and not found in retail malls. Construction is of the highest quality. Our selections at present are coffee tables, end tables , consol tables, round tables , wine racks , chairs , and mirrors . An inlay copper and bronze, or mosaic look without the high price of being inlay or mosaic. Also is a selection of round and square patio or indoor tables.

The shipping fee within the US is $15.00 for orders under $100.00 Shipping for orders over $100.00 is +15% of the order amount unless otherwise noted.
